Chiang Mai: Chiang Mai is almost completely saturated with light rain. This afternoon, Chiang Mai was soaked in almost every area due to the rain that fell, causing the procession of the Sali or Bodhi tree support poles of important temples in Chiang Mai to have to parade in the rain.
According to Thai News Agency, the rain did not reduce the faith and continuation of the traditions during the New Year. The participants in the procession, dressed in colorful local costumes, along with dancers and musicians who played lively music, paraded along the route, starting from Nawarat Bridge before entering various temples. They carried sand to the temple and brought the Sali poles or Bodhi poles to offer to the temples to support the Bodhi tree branches, preventing them from falling or breaking when the wind blows strongly. It is also believed that this will support Buddhism to last forever.
Lanna people hold the belief that the merit of offering the Sali poles will ensure their destiny prospers and does not decline, with the assurance that there will always be people to help and support them. Despite the rain, many places in Chiang Mai remained lively with Songkran festivities. The rain did not discourage Chiang Mai residents and tourists who continued to participate in the celebrations, especially on Ton Yang Road, where water play points were set up along the route. Pickup trucks carrying water tanks added to the lively and joyful atmosphere but resulted in severe traffic congestion in Chiang Mai.
The rain enhanced the Songkran atmosphere in Chiang Mai, making the city moist and seemingly adding excitement to the Songkran water festival.
