NAKHON RATCHASIMA: Thousands of travelers faced extended delays at bus terminals and on major highways as they attempted to return to Bangkok following New Year celebrations. Long queues and traffic congestion were reported at key transport hubs and along major roads, causing significant travel disruptions.
According to Thai News Agency, the second bus station in Nakhon Ratchasima experienced overwhelming crowds as people queued for tickets to return to Bangkok and the eastern regions. Despite bus companies doubling their trips, the demand far exceeded the supply, leaving passengers waiting for over four to five hours. The delays were primarily due to the need for buses to return from Bangkok before they could accommodate more travelers heading to the capital.
Meanwhile, Highway No. 32, known as Asia Road, saw heavy congestion as travelers flocked back to Bangkok. The stretch from Chaiyo District in Ang Thong Province to the border of Maharat District in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province was particularly affected, with speeds averaging between 30 to 40 km/h. The traffic was exacerbated by slowdowns at popular rest stops and bottlenecks, including the bridge over Khlong Bang Kaew in Ang Thong Province.
Public relations officers are advising drivers to consider alternative routes to alleviate congestion. One recommended detour involves turning into Ang Thong town at the Ang Thong Interchange and following Road 309 through Pa Mok District to the Thung Makham Yong Intersection, then continuing onto Route 347 toward Bangkok. This route is expected to reduce travel time and ease the burden on the heavily trafficked main roads.
