Buriram: The "PT Grand Prix of Thailand" has set a new benchmark by breaking the record for the largest attendance, with 228,228 spectators witnessing the thrilling first race of the 2026 MotoGP World Championship. Marco Bezzecchi of Aprilia Racing emerged victorious in a dramatic race that also saw reigning world champion Marc Marquez of Ducati suffer an unfortunate tire blowout.
According to Thai News Agency, the main race was held at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram, Thailand, and was graced by the presence of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. The event was officially inaugurated by Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of MotoGP Sport Entertainment Group, and Jorge Viegas, President of the International Motorcycle Federation (FIM), in a ceremony that included the singing of the Thai national anthem by enthusiastic motorsport fans.
The premier race, a 26-lap showdown, saw Bezzecchi starting from pole position and maintaining his lead from the first corner to finish, clocking a total time of 39 minutes 36.270 seconds. This victory was particularly sweet for Bezzecchi, as he redeemed himself after a crash in the sprint race. He now becomes the first Aprilia rider to win three consecutive races.
Pedro Acosta of KTM demonstrated excellent form, finishing second after starting from sixth on the grid. Despite a strong start, Marc Marquez faced a setback with a rear tire blowout, forcing him to retire with just six laps remaining. This allowed Raul Fernandez of Trackhouse MotoGP Team to secure third place.
The race weekend also featured intense competition in the Moto2 and Moto3 classes. In Moto2, Manuel Gonzalez claimed victory after a race interrupted by two red flags, while David Almanza narrowly won the Moto3 race in a photo finish.
Thailand's contract to host the "Grand Prix of Thailand" has been extended for another five years, ensuring that the country will continue to be a significant hub for motorsport enthusiasts until at least 2031.
