State Railway of Thailand Approves Compensation for Crane Collapse Victims

Bangkok: The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has officially approved compensation measures following a crane collapse incident that resulted in the crushing of a train. Each deceased victim from the accident will receive compensation of 1.34 million baht, while the medical expenses for those injured will be covered until they fully recover.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Anan Pothinimdaeng, the Deputy Governor and Acting Governor of the SRT, addressed the Board of Directors about the incident and the necessary steps to compensate the victims, as directed by the Prime Minister. The meeting concluded with a resolution for prompt compensation, with the SRT and the involved contractor jointly responsible for the payout to the deceased's families. For injuries sustained, the SRT will cover all related medical expenses. Additionally, those experiencing other damages or property losses are encouraged to submit claims for potential compensation on a case-by-case basis. Preventive measures are also being set in place, with the Central Committee for SRT Accident Investigation tasked to thoroughly examine the incident.

Mr. Anan highlighted that contractors are expected to adhere to railway construction standards, ensuring safety by halting work when trains pass through active construction sites. The ongoing investigation aims to verify the contractor's compliance with these safety regulations and identify any procedural deficiencies.

In terms of site restoration, efforts are underway to clear the damaged train carriages and repair the railway, with completion expected in about seven days. The SRT plans to assess all construction projects for potential hazards and improve safety standards through enhanced monitoring systems, including sensors and CCTV installations.

Legally, the SRT has initiated a criminal complaint concerning the fatalities and plans to pursue civil lawsuits for incurred damages. This includes property damage, loss of reputation, and public trust, as well as compensation for the injured and bereaved families. Liability details will be determined following the investigation's findings.
