Bangkok: The Thai army has intensified its relief efforts in response to severe flooding in Songkhla by deploying additional forces and resources. Lt. Gen. Wanchana Sawatdee, spokesman for the Center for the Emergency Situation Administration (CEA), announced the dispatch of personnel, medical teams, and relief supplies via C-130 aircraft, following the disaster's elevation to a Level 4 emergency.
According to Thai News Agency, the Royal Thai Army has established a forward command center to manage the situation and provide urgent relief, particularly in Hat Yai and surrounding districts. The Flood Emergency Operations Center, led by Lt. Gen. Wanchana, has detailed plans for the distribution of consumer goods, medical equipment, and other essential supplies to support those affected in Songkhla Province.
The Forward Flood Emergency Operations Center (FOCOC) has been set up in Songkhla Province, comprising commanders, administrators, and support operations, including disaster relief units from the armed forces and public health officials. The center is collaborating with volunteers and the private sector to manage and coordinate relief efforts effectively.
The province has been designated a critical area, with Hat Yai District being a focal point for relief activities. The district has been divided into care and assistance zones, each with a dedicated unit responsible for managing people, supplies, water, and information. Efforts include relocating residents to safe shelters, distributing food and medical aid, and addressing water management challenges.
The Thai army, Air Force, and Navy are actively involved in rescue operations, with flights and naval vessels dispatched to deliver aid. The Army Development Unit in Region 4 is contributing a growing number of personnel, with 1,500 soldiers already stationed in Songkhla Province.
Lt. Gen. Wanchana acknowledged some challenges in equipment and aid delivery but emphasized the ongoing efforts to address these issues. He expressed gratitude for the generosity of the Thai people and assured that past shortcomings would be improved. Meetings are planned to assess current needs and strategize post-flood rehabilitation once the water recedes.
The government is convening to summarize requests for assistance and assess the situation, with updates expected by the end of the day. Despite some dissatisfaction from affected residents, the military is committed to resolving any conflicts and ensuring effective support for local communities.
