Thailand and Cambodia to Begin Joint Maritime Discussions Under UNCLOS

Bangkok: The Prime Minister reiterated that there is still time to discuss the framework and rules between Thailand and Cambodia.

According to Thai News Agency, the Prime Minister stated that Thailand and Cambodia will be governed by the same rules after Hun Manet agreed to use "compulsory mediation." He emphasized that there is still time to discuss the framework of joint regulations.

Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul commented on Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet's Facebook post announcing the use of "compulsory conciliation" under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to resolve the overlapping maritime areas between Thailand and Cambodia. When asked whether this was a positive step, Prime Minister Anutin stated that at least the two countries would now be operating under the same rules and regulations, whereas previously they were governed by different set of rules. He added that Thailand no longer has the MOU 44, and any future discussions will require establishing new rules and regulations. He noted that there is still time for such discussions, and that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is responsible for this matter.
