The Ministry of Commerce is pushing forward with the creation of the ‘Wang Nam Khiao Coffee’ brand, a GI product from Ya Mo City, expanding the market by continuing local wisdom, generating income for farmers and achieving sustainable growth.
Mr. Phanthil Jongjitrakul, Assistant Minister to the Ministry of Commerce, revealed that Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, assigned him, along with the Secretary to the Minister of Commerce, Mr. Kritsada Tantheottit, and executives of the Ministry of Commerce, to inspect entrepreneurs and groups of farmers growing GI coffee, Wang Nam Khiao coffee, at the coffee roasting plant, Wang Nam Khiao District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, during the Cabinet meeting outside the office in Nakhon Ratchasima Province on July 1-2, 67.
The Ministry of Commerce has a policy to drive the community economy with Geographic Indications (GI) to create added value for community identity products. Since GI products are linked to the production area and
local wisdom, they have their own unique identity, making GI products an important product that drives the Soft Power policy in accordance with the government’s policy. Assistant Minister Mr. Phanthil said, ‘Today, I have come to meet with entrepreneurs and farmers of Wang Nam Khiao coffee and discuss ways to support farmers of Wang Nam Khiao coffee, especially the Department of Intellectual Property, which is ready to help develop strategies on intellectual property for Wang Nam Khiao coffee, build brands, expand distribution channels, and develop packaging by bringing in national designers to help meet market demands, leading to job creation and income generation for farmers and entrepreneurs in the Wang Nam Khiao community to grow sustainably.’
However, Wang Nam Khiao coffee is a unique coffee, grown only in Wang Nam Khiao District, which is 400-600 meters above sea level. With suitable weather and terrain, it has a mellow taste, a gentle aroma, and a not too strong taste. It is a coffee with a fragrant a
roma of flowers, fruits, and chocolate. Currently, there are farmers growing it in an area of ??approximately 510 rai. Wang Nam Khiao coffee is a source of income for farmers and entrepreneurs in the local community of more than 4.3 million baht per year. Currently, the Department of Intellectual Property has registered 8 Thai GI coffees, such as Doi Chang coffee, Doi Tung coffee, Thep Sadet coffee, and Krabi coffee, etc., creating a total market value of 700 million baht, which will strengthen the grassroots economy and create jobs and income for the community sustainably.
