Bangkok: MCOT has appointed Professor Dr. Vilelert Bhurivachra, the Rector of Chulalongkorn University, as the new chairman of the board.
According to Thai News Agency, the Board of Directors of MCOT Public Company Limited voted unanimously during its 10th meeting of 2026 to elect Professor Dr. Vilelert Poorivat, who is also the President of the Council of University Presidents of Thailand (CUPT). He has commenced implementing policies aimed at reviving business operations, boosting revenue, and transforming Channel 9 MCOT HD into an educational channel for the Thai populace.
The meeting also resulted in the decision to appoint Ms. Yada Kasayapanan, an independent director, as Acting President and CEO, effective May 8, 2026. She replaces Mr. Sommai Suwanwong, who resigned but will continue in his role as Deputy President and CEO for Marketing and Sales.
The committee members have expressed confidence in Dr. Vilelert's vision and expertise in modern AI-driven communication strategies. These are viewed as essential for navigating the current challenges posed by changing consumer behaviors and maintaining a competitive edge against foreign platforms.
Dr. Vilelert is recognized for his dual expertise in academia and international business administration. He holds degrees from prestigious institutions such as Chulalongkorn University and Thammasat University, a Master's degree from Yale University, and a Ph.D. from Oxford University. His professional experience includes positions with global organizations like IBM, P and G, and Hakuhodo. He also occupies significant roles internationally, including President of the Association of Southeast Asian Higher Education Institutions (ASAIHL) and President of the Asia-Europe Lifelong Learning Network (ASEM LLL Hub).
In his new role, Dr. Vilelert has initiated policies designed to transform MCOT's media outlets into a "Learning Station" that integrates various platforms. This initiative seeks to improve vocational skills and knowledge across Thailand, thereby creating sustainable economic opportunities.
Dr. Vilelert is notably the second university president to take on the role of chairman at MCOT, following Professor Surapol Nitikraipoj from Thammasat University, who served from 2008 to 2011.
