Train Collision at Makkasan Railway Crossing Leads to Arrests and Legal Proceedings

Bangkok: The train driver and the level crossing attendant have been taken into custody and remanded to the Ratchada Criminal Court; bail was opposed. On the afternoon of May 16, 2026, freight train No. 2126 (Laem Chabang-Bang Sue) collided with an air-conditioned bus, route 206, at the Makkasan railway crossing beneath the Airport Rail Link station on Asoke-Din Daeng Road. The collision resulted in a severe fire, causing 8 immediate fatalities and over 30 injuries. Initial investigations revealed that the bus was stopped at a red light straddling the railway tracks while the crossing barrier was unable to close properly.

According to Thai News Agency, investigators at Makkasan Police Station have summoned two suspects, both railway operations officers, for further detailed questioning to strengthen the case file. These include Mr. Somyaporn (last name withheld), the train driver, and Mr. Uthen (last name withheld), the railway crossing signal operator at the time of the incident. Following the questioning, at approximately 10:50 AM, investigators escorted both suspects to Ratchada Criminal Court to file a request for their initial detention, in accordance with legal procedure. Railway legal officers were already waiting at the court.

During the arrest, reporters attempted to question Mr. Uthen, the railway crossing signal operator, about whether he wanted to apologize, why he didn't look back at the train while waving the flag, and why he lowered the flag so quickly. He only responded, "I'm sorry." Reporters also tried to question Mr. Sayomporn, the train driver, about whether he saw the warning lights, whether he wanted to apologize or say anything to the deceased, whether he had consumed any drugs before performing his duty, and whether there was any sudden braking. However, none of the reporters answered any questions.

Meanwhile, the BMTA bus driver, Mr. Lapit (last name withheld), who suffered severe injuries and burns, remains hospitalized. During his treatment, doctors conducted blood tests and found no traces of drugs in his system. Police stated that no charges have been filed yet, pending questioning once his injuries have healed and he is able to give a statement. It is expected that Mr. Lapit will face the same charges as Mr. Sayomporn: negligence causing death and property damage.
