Government Urges MEA and PEA to Lower Solar Panel Costs to Avoid Public Debt

Bangkok: Deputy Interior Minister, Mr. Phonphir Suwannachavi, has emphasized the government's commitment to promoting solar energy without burdening the public with debt. The government is urging the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) and the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) to expedite efforts in reducing electricity costs and installation fees, making them competitive with private companies, while continuing to promote clean energy.

According to Thai News Agency, the policy aims to ensure that solar panel installations are a tool to alleviate the cost of living and provide genuine energy options for citizens, rather than becoming a financial burden. MEA and PEA have been tasked with exploring methods to decrease costs in production, installation, and service fees to make clean energy accessible at reasonable prices. They are also expected to review and adjust solar rooftop installation rates to encourage wider adoption among the public.

The government is also enhancing its public relations efforts to educate the public about the benefits of solar rooftops, including safety standards, service warranties, and long-term reliability. These efforts include explaining the one-stop service process that assists citizens in obtaining installation permits and coordinating financing with financial institutions.
