Army Chief Urges Precaution in Forest Foraging Following Cambodian Soldier Encounter

Buriram: The Army Chief of Staff has issued a stern warning to villagers foraging in the forest to inform local officials, including the village headman and community leader, in advance to ensure timely assistance in emergencies. This announcement comes in the wake of increased tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border.

According to Thai News Agency, General Chaiyapruk Duangprapat, Chief of Staff of the Royal Thai Army, recently visited Chong Sae Takoo in Buriram Province to oversee border security operations. His visit also included a meeting with Mr. Apirak Butphet, a local resident who recently faced an armed encounter with Cambodian soldiers while foraging in the forest. General Chaiyapruk's inspection aimed to identify vulnerabilities after reports suggested that Cambodian soldiers might be exploiting forest routes to illegally enter Thailand. He emphasized the need to adjust troop deployments and enhance border surveillance using sensor equipment and drones.

The situation has raised concerns about border security, with villagers reporting encounters with Cambodian soldiers at close range. General Chaiyapruk acknowledged these reports and confirmed that the soldiers were indeed Cambodian. He also mentioned that Thai commanders have communicated with the Cambodian soldiers, urging them to exercise caution and avoid actions that could harm Thai citizens.

General Chaiyapruk addressed various theories regarding the presence of Cambodian soldiers, including the possibility that they were gathering intelligence, patrolling the area, or collecting forest products. He indicated that if evidence of a violation of the Joint Statement between Thailand and Cambodia is found, appropriate action will be taken.

In a related incident, General Chaiyapruk discussed the case of Mr. Yot Saynoi, a villager from Surin Province who was detained by Cambodian soldiers while foraging near the border. Efforts are underway by the Consulate and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to expedite assistance. The Army Chief reiterated the importance of villagers notifying local authorities, emphasizing that traditional practices should not compromise safety. He assured that Thailand will continue monitoring high-risk areas and deploying troops to ensure security.
